Hawker Food Hunt: Tiong Bahru Food Market & Hawker Centre

11:38:00

This hawker food hunt post will be going to Tiong Bahru Food Market and Hawker Centre.
Tiong Bahru Market is a landmark most youths are blind to despite its looming stature in a neighbourhood teeming of both old and new wonders.

1.  Jian Bo Chwee Kueh 楗柏水粿.
  Chwee Kueh - $2.40 for 8 Pieces

I rarely eat chwee kueh cause it was super oily and salty but this was really good. It was very unphotogenic but taste wise still okay. The chwee kueh were made with an excellent ratio of flour to water hence their texture was soft and almost smooth. The chye poh was fragrant and was with toasted sesame seeds. It make the chye poh sweet and salty with a slightly nutty aroma. The chilli was good too, it was fiery hot!!

Taste: 3.5/5

2. 178 Lor Mee.
 Lor Mee - $3

This stall had received various national accolades and was featured in a number of local food programmes as well as various print media. So it will be a high expectation. Taste-wise, The noodles are moist, well cooked and spongy. The dark sauce was thick but not sticky, and it full of flavour. The shark meat were the soul of the dish, it was crispy on the outside and tender-soft yet juicy on the inside.

Taste: 3.5/5

3. Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodles.
 Wanton Noodles - $3

This noodle stall is famous for their premium bu jian tian (“pig armpit”) char siew. They only prepare a limited quantity per day. But sadly i was a bit late and it was sold out!! The normal char siew was still good. The char siew is well marbled, fatty yet lean and tender with a nice bite. Thin and springy without the taste of alkaline, the noodles are lightly drenched in clear stock just before serving. The sambal chilli wasn't that good as it wasn't spicy at all.

Taste: 2.75/5

4. Min Nan Pork Ribs Prawn Noodles.
Pork Ribs Prawn Noodles - $4

You may have known this hawker stall from the Channel 8 show, Buzzing Cashier (抢摊大行动). It is one of the ailing businesses that the show has revived. Taste-wise, The prawns are fresh and juicy, and the ribs tender and meaty. The broth was delicate, sweet and flavorful. The noodles was over cooked as it was quite soggy. The sauce and chilli was quite weak as it wasn't strong and flavorful, spicy enough!

Taste: 1.5/5

5. Lee Hong Kee Cantonese Roasted.
Roasted Pork and Duck - $5

Business’s been around for more than 45 years and as history attests. The highly recommended roasted meat was quite disappointed!

Taste-wise, the roasted pork skin wasn't crispy and the meat wasn't tender and flavorful instead it was over salty. The roasted duck skin wasn't crispy too and the meat was quite dry and tough. The sauce was good as it was savory and it went well with rice and meat.

Taste: 0.5/5

Overall, not to famous and highly recommend food is nice! Should try out some infamous food and recommend to you guys someday!
