Food Hunt: 106 Seafood Restaurant, Ah Seng Bak Kut Teh, Hong Chang Eating House, Ho Kee Pau, Ivins

21:25:00

Jthejon food hunt is back!
This time round i am hunting for Asian Cuisine!!
Including, tze char, dim sum Bak Kut Teh and even Nonya cuisine.
Read on for more review and food i'll be recommending.

First stop, 106 Seafood Restaurant (Tze Char).

106 Seafood Tze Char located at Hougang Blk 106 is famous for their fish head, pork knuckle and their fried mee sua.

 Assam Fish Head - $18

The assam fish head was really good. The red snapper fish they used was absolutely fresh, like still swimming in the curry fresh. The gravy was creamy, thick, fragrant, spicy but not overwhelmed. It's a must-try dish, i highly recommended.

Sweet and Sour Pork - $12

It was pretty average. I felt that this sweet and sour pork lack of some taste. It was really light and sweet. Hence, the pork was well fried and and stir fried but the sauce wasn't that good. They should be improve on their sauce.

Sambal Kang Kong - $6

Kangkong is rather crunchy, not soft(you know there are places that cook kangkong till a little too soft). But it is rather spicy as compared to other tze char stalls.

Food: 3/5

Ambiance: 1/5
Service: 2/5

Overall, the food quality was good, i have been to there often for their Assam fish head. The assam fish head was really the "Bomb" of everything.

Second stop, Ah Seng Bak Kut Teh.

Ah Seng Bak Ku Teh is located at Hougang, and is newly opened recently.

The dark soya sauce wasn't thick and sweet enough like other bak ku teh stalls.

 You Tiao - $2

Average.

 Braised Pig Intestine - $6

It wasn't good enough. The braised pig intestine was lacking of some flavor and it wasn't well braised. It not worth the price.

 Minced Meat Omelette - $6

It was super bad!! The omelette was overcooked still it had a burnt taste and the minced meat hardly to be found. Feel so cheated about it.

Pork Ribs Soup - $6

It was pretty average. Meat was really soft and tender but something was amiss, was not that tasty.
The broth was light and quite salty, did not have a strong enough flavorful pork stock broth in it.

Braised Pig Trotter - $6

The braised pig trotter was good. The sweet tasting sauce when doused onto your rice, makes them a perfect match. The meat was soft and tender, the skin was smooth , it had a melting texture!!

Pig Kidney Soup - $6

It was pretty average. The broth taste same as the pork ribs soup. But the kidney was really fresh and they cleaned it well.

Food: 1.5/5
Ambiance: 1/5
Service: 3/5

Overall, the bak ku teh was really disappointing. It was not worth a try.

Third stop, Hong Chang Eating House.

I was recommended by my friend that this food place sell cheap and nice frog porridge and sambal stingray. So i make a trip down with my friend. Hong Chang Eating House is located at a corner of Braddell Road, not that easily accessible by public transport.

Gong Bao Frog - $8/ 1 frog, $13/ 2 frog, $16/ 3 frog, $22/ 4 frog

The frog legs were succulent and tender, well braised in the dried chilli sauce. The fragrance of the sauce went very well with the smooth texture of the porridge. But the spiciness need to improve.

Porridge - $2/ Small, $3/ Big

The congee was not totally plain in taste and resembles more of a watery version which has been cooked for long hours. It goes very well with the sauce into it.

Sambal Stingray - $10

It was such a big serving, sambal was fragrant and of an acceptable spiciness. Meat was juicy and tender. It came with a chincalok sauce and it goes so well with it.

Food: 2.75/5

Ambiance: 2/5
Sevice: 2/5

Overall, I would highly recommend this place if you're looking at a value for money dinner place to have a simple dinner!

Fourth stop, Ho Kee Pau.

Ho Kee Pau 和記包 is everywhere. You can find one at Food Republic food court over at Nex, Serangoon or head down Maxwell Hawker Center if you are in town.

Egg Tart - $3.50/3

It was pretty good. The layered crust was crispy unlike the usual ones from outside and I liked it alot, but the real winner was the smooth and tasty custard.

Siew Mai - $4.20/5

The siewmai was impressive! Chewy with fresh ingredients and not too floury.

Har Gow (Prawn Dumpling) - $4.20/5

Har Gow is a must-order for me at all dimsum places. The prawn here was good and fresh!

Chives Dumpling - $4.20/5

It was pretty good. It was full of ingredient and the meat was tender and juicy. The chives was fresh.

Char siew bau - $3/ 3

It was pretty good. The honey-glazed pork just exudes a level of sweetness that was seductive, though i would prefer that the skin of the bun to be slightly thinner as i had to bite quite deeply to get to the BBQ Pork.

Food: 2/5
Ambiance: 0.5/5
Service: 1/5

Overall, it would't worth the travel to ho kee pau outlet. It was just a pretty average dim sum.

Fifth stop, Ivins.

Ivins serves cheap and Peranakan food. It's located at kovan heartland mall.

Sambal KangKong - $5.90

The sambal wasn't fragrance and spicy. It was just average sambal kang kong.

Honey Pork - $7.90

The fried pork in dark sauce that looks black. Doesn't look appealing but it fared 'ok' in taste.

Curry Fish Head - $19

It was very bad! The curry very diluted and not spicy at all. The meat wasn't fresh enough too.

Food: 0.5/5
Ambiance: 2/5
Service: 2/5

Overall, it wasn't worth a try. The food really bad. I surely can find some nicer Peranakan food somewhere else.
