Traditional Local Breakfast Food Hunt

15:37:00

Jthejon is back!!
I will be hunting for traditional local food on this post.
Stay with me and read on if you are interested!

First stop, Toast Box.

Toast Box is a reflection of the coffee shops from the 60s and 70s, where the common practice for breakfast was a fragrant cup of Nanyang Coffee accompanied by freshly toasted bread. This warm, nostalgic concept was reinvented to bring back fond memories for those who missed the good old times, and for the younger ones to experience the feel and flavours of a bygone era.

Established in October 2005 as a food stall unit of Food Republic Wisma Atria in Singapore, Toast Box has fast expanded with over 70 outlets strategically located all over Singapore, made easy and convenient for our customers (both young and old) to enjoy Nanyang Coffee and freshly toasted bread. Toast Box has been well received in other territories, expanding its foothold in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China.

Coffee - $1.80

Toast Box's signature traditional Nanyang Kopi, which we fondly call in Southeast Asia. Roasted and grinded with Nanyang coffee beans on the spot. The milk to go with the coffee is specially made too! The coffee smells so aromatic.

Teh C - $1.80

Tea with condemn milk and fresh milk. The tea was smooth, strong and aromatic.

Toast Box Traditional Toast Set - $4.80

The all-time favourite! The Kaya Toast! Bite into our Kaya Toast and experience its scrumptiously crusty bits on the outside and heavenly soft toast within. Savor the sweetness of coconut jam and a slice of butter bursting in your mouth. Crave for more!
Asian Delight Curry Chicken Set - $7.50

Gulp the flavourful and mildly spicy coconut-based curry served with soft chicken and large chunks of potatoes simmered in a crock pot over hours, tenderness is guaranteed! Opt for a bowl of steamed fragrant rice or dip our freshly grilled thick toast in the piping hot thick gravy!

Second stop, Ya Kun Kaya Toast.

After operating for more than 15 years at Telok Ayer Basin, Ah Koon relocated his business across the street to Lau Pa Sat. The stall was then simply called Ya Kun Coffeestall, the name 'Ya Kun' being the hanyu pinyin equivalent of 'Ah Koon'. The business remained in Lau Pa Sat for another 15 years during which it clinched 'The Most Courteous Stall in Lau Pa Sat' award. In 1984, it moved back across the street to Telok Ayer Transit Food Market to make way for the revamp at Lau Pa Sat. Finally in 1998, Ya Kun Kaya Toast Coffeestall settled down at its present site at Far East Square and is now completely managed by his children.

Coffee - $1.80

The coffee was really smooth, strong and aromatic. It's my second best place to have traditional local coffee.

Teh C - $1.80

The tea was really aromatic and light. The sweetness was perfect.

Kaya Butter Toast Set - $4.80

The soft boiled egg was really mouth-watering!

The famous Kaya Toast was indeed delicious with well-toast bread and the kaya butter jam which has a perfect sweetness.

Third stop, Chin Mee Chin Confectionery 真美珍茶室

Chin Mee Chin Confectionery, located at 204 East Coast Road, is a landmark coffeeshop in Katong. It is popular for its kaya, a kind of custard jam. Styled like a typical Chinese confectionery, this Hainanese coffeeshop exudes an old world charm with its ceiling fans and marble-top tables typical of coffeeshops of the 1950s. The baroque interior is accentuated by its defining floor tiles. Affectionately known as CMC by Katong residents, its simple breakfast of kaya toast, soft boiled eggs and coffee are its most famous item on the menu.

Coffee - $1

The coffee was pretty normal. It's just an ordinary coffee.

Teh C - $1

The tea was pretty smooth, and aromatic. The sweetness was just prefect.

Egg Tart - $0.80

The egg tart is a must-try items. The crust was thicker-than-usual, but crumbly and fragrant.

Kaya Butter Toast - $1

The kaya spread was aromatic and sweet, but it was just nice.

Food: 2.75/5
Ambiance: 1.5/5
Service: 2/5

Overall, the food was pretty alright. But the egg tart was really delicious. It's a must-to-try items!! The coffee and tea was just so so. The ambiance was as noisy as market. But it still worth a try.

Kaya Butter Toast Set - $4.60

The kaya butter toast was pretty normal. The toast has a burnt taste and the kaya was very plain. The egg was very normal. The coffee quality was like normal food court or coffee shop coffee.

Food: 0.5
Ambiance: 2/5
Service: 2/5

Overall, The food quality was really bad. It was really not worth a try.

Coffee and Toast Outlet. Click on the link to find out the location of the outlets.

Fifth stop, Coffee Kaki.

Coffee Kaki is a coffee store that serves beverages such as tea and coffee. Perfect place for breakfast and tea breaks.

Teh C - $1.60

The tea was pretty bad. The tea tasted like those instant packaging tea. It was really bad.

kaya Butter Toast Set - $4.60

The kaya butter toast was pretty alright. The toast was soft and plain. The kaya was very plain, not much taste at all. The butter was really salty too.

The coffee was smooth but it wasn't strong and aromatic!!

Food: 0/5
Ambiance: 1/5
Service: 0/5

Overall, the food quality was really bad!! Terrible customer service, the staff was screaming out the counter and eventually taking the wrong order. No apologize at all.

Seventh stop, Good Morning Nanyang Cafe 早安南洋.

Local Singapore coffee and toast cafe. Excellent food, great ambiance, nice meeting place for coffee, snack and chat. Voted best toast in Singapore by Straits Times. Rated highest Six Chopsticks and Three Bowls by Makansutra.

Kaya Butter Bun Set - $4.80

It was just alright!! The runny egg was slightly undercooked as some of the egg white were still transparent. The bun was just so so, the kaya was freshly made daily, that's why the kaya are aromatic!

The tea was pretty normal, the tea aroma wasn't strong! The coffee was much better!

Food: 1.75/5
Ambiance: 3/5
Service: 2/5

Overall, the food quality was not bad but it can be better. The coffee was good but not the tea! I think Ya Kun and Toast Box is still the best for traditional local breakfast.
