Jthejon Travelogue: Tanjung Balai

16:17:00

Few weeks back, I went to one of a Indonesia Island called Tanjung Balai with my dad to attend a event organised by my Indonesia relatives. We boarded the ferry from harbourfront ferry terminal. It took us 2 hours to reach the destination. Once we alight, our relatives came and fetch us and brought us to their place for dinner. After dinner we went walk around the place.

Some of thee shop houses selling food during night time but in the day time, they are normal mini mart.

Trying out some of the food. This stall sell fried stuff, including, chicken wings, tou pok, prawn cracker, and etc.

Prawn Cracker

The prawn cracker was very small but it tasted good. It was super oily too.

Over here, there's a few mini mart that open 24 hrs. This's one of them.

In Tanjung Balai, you will find a lot street stall selling this kind of stuff. I had no idea what is the fruit call but it tasted sour and look like longan in large version.

The hotel we staying over for that night. This hotel Alishan was damn lousy. No heater, no lift, air condition not cold enough, and room was quite small.

The public transport over there. The bus over there, one pricing get you to any place along the route. The bus was super small, max 8 pax.

We went to have our breakfast at this famous Bak Kut Teh over here. Was recommended by our relatives.

Tea

The traditional tea that everyone drinking almost everywhere. The tea has a light bodied and a strong tea aroma. Easy to drink.

Taste: 2/5

They're using green chilli padi.

Bak Kut Teh

The broth was clear and smooth but it was quite tasteless. The pork ribs wasn't that tender, it was quite tough.

Taste: 0/5
Pig Blood Cake

A unique dish i tried over there. The pig blood cake texture was like jelly, it was super soft. The taste wise was quite unique, it taste like tofu with a bit of flavor in it. But overall it tasted good.

Taste: 3.5/5

We also order Braised Pig trotter and Pork Ball

The Brasied Pig Trotter was good. It was well braised and the sauce was savory, fragrance and not so oily. The meat was tender and soft. I don't even need to bite it.

Taste: 3.25/5

The Pork Ball was good but not the soup. The broth was extremely salty till it was inedible. The pork ball was meaty, springy and flavorful.

Taste: 1/5

Egg Prata

Went over to the stall beside Bak Kut Teh and had a piece of egg prata, cux it look damn good. Or maybe i am not full. The egg prata was just pretty normal. Nothing special.

Taste: 2.5/5

Some mobile stall going over the place and sell their items. This is one of it.

LAN Shop. The computer and equipment was very outdated.

Went explore their wet market.

I had no idea what is this huge fish call, but they will used this fish to make salted fish.

Salted fish making in progress.

Over at Tanjung Balai, they need to buy water when their water ran out. This mobile stall is selling water to those house hold. The water they took from, is from somewhere far away from the island. They say the water came from a mountain.

Have our lunch at some food places.

Wanton Mee

Indonesia style of wanton mee. The taste wise wasn't that good. The noodles texture was too soggy and bland. The sauce was quite bland. The ingredients was char siew, fishball, meatball, fish cake, and veggie. The veggie has a weird taste. Yuck! Overall it wasn't good!

Taste: 0/5

I went back alone first cux i can't stand it. Brought a ferry ticket back alone and carry lots of stuff back too.

Overall, if you want experience a kampong lifestyle, you can go Tanjung Balai and experience it. Tanjung Balai is leaving a kampong life. Everyone over there seem very happy and stress-free. Almost everyone over there got their own Car. Some even have more than 1 car. And most of them are not working.

My personal experience, i don't think i will get used/like of the Kampong lifestyle.

Thank You,
Jthejon
