Hawker Food Hunt: Maxwell Food Centre

15:05:00

Located in the heart of Chinatown, Maxwell Road Hawker Centre has over 100 stalls, providing one of the biggest varieties of local food in Singapore. Even with the influx of vendors, the stalls’ offerings are very varied and you will easily spoilt for choice here.

1.  Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice.
 Chicken Rice - $5.70

Celebrity chef and host Anthony Bourdain once said that the rice here is so good that you can eat it on its own. One of the most famous Hainanese chicken rice stalls in Singapore.

The chicken was tender and juicy, and it is accompanied by fragrant and fluffy rice. The homemade chilli sauce here is also excellent, made with lime juice instead of vinegar for that extra kick.

Taste: 3.75/5

2. Jin Hwa Fish Soup.
Fish Sliced with Mee Hoon - $4

The broth was milky rich, tangy, tasteful and blended well with the noodles. The fish slices were fresh and nicely fried to perfection, with the smoothness of the white noodles.

Taste: 3/5

3. Zhen Zhen Porridge.
Century egg with pork sliced Congee - $3

The congee is uniformly consistently, smooth and silky, cooked to perfection with fresh ingreedients. This is topped with fried shallots, spring onion and ginger. Then sesame oil and white pepper is drizzled on top to season. The congee is steaming hot and just so tasty.

Taste: 3/5

4. China Street Hainanese Curry Rice.
Curry Rice - $3.80

I choosed cabbage, egg, pork cutlet and braised pork belly and it cost $3.80. Thick Hainanese Curry with some kick. The pork cutlet was crispy, tender and flavorful. It's a must-order item. The braised pork belly was a little disappointed. It wasn't tender enough.

Taste: 2/5

5. Xing Xing Tapioca Cake.
Ondeh Ondeh - $4

Bite into the coconut-coated super soft ondeh ondeh and you get a burst of liquid gula melaka, which might tastes like liquid gold. They're handmade and addictive. Go early to get your hands on their ondeh ondeh if you want to try it, because it sold out really quickly.

Taste: 3.75/5

6. Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake.
Oyster Cake - $2

Oyster, prawns, minced pork & chives encased in a thin batter that is crispy on the outside, moist and soft bursting with flavours inside. A must try at Maxwell Food Centre!
