Hawker Food Hunt: Zion Riverside Food Centre

Once awhile i will be doing hawker food hunt! This triangular hawker centre serves a more atas crowd populating the River Valley neighbourhood. Despite warning signs like a ‘101 guide to hawker food’ by our tourism board at the entrance, the higher-than-average prices, and a rather sparse weekday lunch crowd, the food’s pretty legit. Here are a few dishes we tried at the breezy food centre.
1. No.18 Fried Kway Tiao.
Fried Kway Tiao - $3.50
This stall could possibly be the most famous tenant among all others. thin rice sheets and yellow noodles stir-fried over high heat with plump cockles, Chinese sausages, fish cakes, crunchy beansprouts and egg in savory sweet black sauce. The textural combination was superb and of ideal moisture, tied tastily together by quintessential umami-ness of pork lard, but somewhat lacking that bit of coveted smokey wok hei aroma.

2. Lau Goh Teochew Chye Thow Kway.
White Carrot Cake - $4
The White Carrot Cake is especially lovely with coat of crispy egg enveloping soft pieces of carrot cake and generous dosage of chye poh (preserved radish).

3. Stall No: 20.
Fried Hokkien Mee - $4
4. Boon Tiong Kee Chicken Rice.
Chicken Rice - $3.50
The possibility of having a plate of one of Singapore’s best chicken rice at hawker price gave us reason to check out this stall. We learnt a little too late – after dry chicken and bland rice – that this perhaps wasn’t the real deal. On closer look, we realised it was ‘Tiong’ and not ‘Tong’. Long queue but disappointing!

5. Western food.
Burger Steak - $6.50
Highly recommended by the working adults around there! This is known as one of the oldest hawker centre in Singapore. The western is a must to try, despite the food takes longer than usual but be thoughtful that the folks serving you, have been here more than 20years!
The burger steak tasted so nice that I almost went for second serving or maybe the portion was just too little!
