Food Review: Chew Kee Eating House x Chiew Kee Noodle House

15:21:00

Walking along Upper Cross Street in Chinatown, you will wonder if you are seeing double. Two shops selling Soya Sauce Chicken, with name close to each other, that you might think it was a spelling mistake during the naming of the shop. However, sibling rivalry are the theme here and we as the foodies in Singapore are to benefit for more option to have.

Soya Sauce Chicken - $14 Half

Soy Sauce Chicken, the light brown chicken skin was well infused with the soy sauce sweetness and the chicken was really moist and tender. Even the sauce itself has a nice subtle sweetness from the soy sauce but not overpowering.

Taste: 3.75/5

Yellow Egg Noodle - $2

The egg noodle is thin, cooked to superb al dente with a crunchy and springy texture. The noodle does not have any alkaline water taste like those you find in ordinary wanton noodle.

Taste: 3/5

Food: 3.5/5
Ambiance: NA
Service: 0.5/5

Overall, the soya sauce chicken was really good, it's the better one than others. It's worth a try.

CHEW KEE EATING HOUSE
8 Upper Cross Street Singapore 058327
Opening Hours: 9 am to 7 pm (Closed on Fri & Public Holiday)

There is a direct competition between Chiew Kee and Chew Kee as opposing relatives run the shops. They share an identical menu and have competitive-based pricing; half of their soya sauce chicken is at $13. Although the texture of the chicken is tender, it is less robust in flavor due to un-thorough marination.
This could be the likely reason why they are not as crowded during lunch hours in comparison to other stalls.

Soya Sauce Chicken - $26 Whole

I do taste difference in the Soy Sauce Chicken, which led me suspecting his recipe is a modified one. Slightly sweeter and more elaborated flavour can be tasted. Although different, I feel that it is as tasty as the sister’s.  At least, the taste lingers well after your last bite on the tender chicken.

Taste: 4/5

Yellow Egg Noodle - $2

The yellow egg noodle more for its springy texture and delightful bite.

Taste: 3/5

Food: 3.5/5
Ambiance: NA
Service: 1/5

Overall, this soya sauce chicken is better than chew kee!! The sauce is tastier than them. I would recommend everyone to try this stall instead of the other.
