Food Review: Pizza Express
08:36:00Their passion for Italian food can be traced back to their founder, Peter Boizot, and his love affair with Italy. Unhappy with the pizza in London, he shipped over a real pizza oven, knocked down a wall to squeeze it into a small restaurant, and opened the very first PizzaExpress on Wardour Street in Soho.
Ultimately, it’s all about the food. How could it not be? After all, Peter’s love for pizza is where it all began. It’s the same today. Pizza – it’s what they do best! In the kitchens there are no microwaves, no fryers, just an oven. Everything on the menu must work around that. Take the chocolate fudge cake – it’s baked to perfection in the ovens each morning, but it’s what you find in front of the ovens that really matters – The Pizzaiolos!
STUNNING DESIGN
They are known for the great designs of the restaurants. They believe in using the best natural materials to produce designs that are timeless and practical. The design and layout of their restaurants focuses one’s attention on the theatre that is their open kitchen. There are a few core design elements that are present in all of their restaurants but beyond these elements they encourage their designers to create a very different “look” for each restaurant. As much as possible, they even try and incorporate elements of the neighbourhood that their restaurants are situated in into the overall design of that particular restaurant. Their principles and passion for great design began with Enzo Apicella. He designed the second PizzaExpress restaurant, in Coptic Street, London. He’s done a lot more since then. And each time, he pours in the same love, care and attention to detail that our Pizzaiolos devote to their food. So next time you’re in one of their restaurants enjoying their food or simply sipping on some wine, tea or coffee… look around. Inspiration is closer than you think.
