Food Review: Taiwan Railway Bento 台湾鐵路便當

14:11:00

Railway bento was first introduced in Taiwan by the Japanese in the first half of 20th century when it is under Japan colony. Since then it has remains popular until present day, commonly sold in railway stations and inside train cabins.

Taiwan Railway Bento 台湾鐵路便當 is a delightful facsimile of the popular Taiwan Bento outlets. They serve many varieties of these charming rice boxes, and many of the Taiwanese favorites are also available here. The beautiful rice box was crafted by wooden crates.

Interior
The place is spacious and Taiwan-related memorabilia line the walls. Notice that disposable cutlery & serviettes are placed on every table so customers can just help themselves. There will not be any service staff around.

A wide range of side dishes and main bentos to choose from.

There's also a wide range of Taiwan snacks and instant drink for sale.

Food
Braised Minced Meat Bento - $4.80

Braised minced meat sauce, braised egg, braised tau pok and preserved vegetable.

The braised minced meat sauce was flavorful and hearty. Every mouth in it was fill with the generous portion of meaty and flavorful braised mined meat sauce. The braised egg and tau pok was well braisedas it was flavorful and fragrant. The preserved vegetable balanced everything.

Fried Chicken Cutlet Bento - $6.80

Chicken Cutlet topped with chilli powder, Braised egg, Braised minced meat, Taiwan sausage, Braised tau pok and preserved vegetable.

The famous Taiwan chicken cutlet is also available here. The chicken cutlet was huge and it was bigger than the rice box. The chicken was crispy and tender. It can be compared with those eatery stall that sell famous Taiwan chicken cutlet.

Century Beancurd - $3.50

Century Egg, Tofu, Chilli Padi, Special sauce.

One of the famous side dish that Taiwan Railway Bento served. It was quite different as what i expected. The tofu was chilled, soft and fragrant. The sauce was the main thing in this dish. The sauce was a little bit salty and the chilli padi didn't blend well with it. I think they should remove or replace the chilli padi with something else.

Fried King Oyster Mushroom - $3.50

Fried king oyster mushroom topped with chilli powder.

It was pretty good as it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I'm sure you will be addicted to this dish, once you have tried it. One more thing to add up, I suggest they should apply more chilli powder to it as it was good.

Thanks for the invitation and the great hospitality.

Overall, it was a place that's worth at least one visit for the experience of eating a railway bento and have a feel of the Taiwanese culture, without flying to Taiwan. Avoid the weekday office lunch crowd as it will be packed.
